The most realistic view on the new iPad

From a fan girl. This is why I absolutely love reading Rosa Golijan’s articles. She is passionate, she is thorough, she is down to earth.

I too love Apple, and I too believe that the new iPad is the best tablet out there today… but there was something missing today.

There was no magic, there were no lines and there were no applauding Apple Store employees.

Half empty. Half excited. I know that was not the way I felt when I bought the iPhone 4, and I know that was not the way that I felt when I bought the iPad 2. Perhaps Apple’s marketing persona only allows for sheer excitement for one product per year. Perhaps it’s just me.

Whether you choose to buy the latest iOS devices subsequently or not is up to you, but I am not sure that that is the way it is meant to be anymore. For me the new iPad is not perfect and, frankly, it is not because the iPad itself was not perfect. Rosa’s reasons were spot on

Sometimes it is plain difficult to admit your true emotions. But the good writers do it. Rosa may just be the best, most consistent tech writer on the web today.

World’s Most Expensive Hotels

While for some this may be a hotel-dream-list or a hotel-can’t-do-list for other this may just be as simple as a to do list. Money is worth nothing until you spend it - is undoubtedly the ultimate philosophy behind the creators and marketers of these hotels.

If you have a few hundred thousand to splurge for a place to sleep, these are the itplaces to do just that. If you don’t, well at least this is free for reading -

11. Peninsula Suite, The Peninsula - Hong Kong

Price: US$10,000 per night

Stunning vistas to say the least. This suite on the 26th floor offers everything from an in-suite gym to a full-fledged kitchen to a 24hr butler on call.

The experience could not but begin at the airport where you can choose between a helicopter flight or a Rolls-Royce ride to the hotel. And just in case you found your self in the middle of some heli-traffic the hotel has not one but two helipads on it’s roof.

10. The Sultan’s Suite, Çirağan Palace Kempinski - Istanbul

Price: US$15,400 per night

Where the two worlds of Europe and Asia meet, this 16th century wood-built hotel offers you an opportunity to live like a true Sultan. It features lavish views over the Bosphorus, a private butler, stunningly detailed architectural elements and fine art.

The building was used by the Ottoman Sultans from 1857 onward and was later transformed into what you see in the picture by luxury hotel line Kempinsky. Their list of past residents includes names like Giorgio Armani and Prince Charles.

9. Royal Suite, Burj al Arab - Dubai

Price: US$18,800 per night

Beyond luxury. The Burj Al Arab is a Suites-Only hotel. It opened in 1999 and tops it’s prices with its two double floor Royal Suites. Living rooms, dining rooms and fully equiped kitchens and Jacuzzi baths are to say the least. It also features a butler as well as a choice to arrive from the airport by Rolls Royce or by helicopter.

I really like this project.

The Lexicon project is based on a simple premise: people can’t be expected to live more sustainable lives if they don’t even know the most basic terms and principles that define sustainability.

For the past three years Douglas Gayeton and Laura Howard-Gayeton have crisscrossed the USA to learn this new language of sustainability from its foremost practitioners in food and farming.  Alice Waters on edible schoolyards.  Wes Jackson on reinventing wheat farming.  Joel Salatin on embracing the value of saner farming practices.  Vandana Shiva on the global imperative of protecting seeds.  Paul Stamets on how mushrooms can save the world.  Will Allen on Food Security.  Temple Grandin on the humane slaughter of animals.  Farmer John on the revolutionary idea of community-supported agriculture.

The creators of angry birds are now billionaires

Yes, billionaires.

If Rovio is indeed currently valued at up to 9 billion dollars, that 77.7 percent translates to roughly $7 billion on paper between the four of them (at the high end of the company’s estimated value, to be perfectly clear).

The ‘four of them’ referes to the management team: Kaj Hed (Chairman) - with 69.7%, Niklas Hed (COO) - with 4.3%, Peter Vesterbacka (CMO) - with 3.1% & Mikael Hed (CEO)- with 0.6%.

What you probably did not know is that it took the team 50 tries before striking gold with Angry birds, and that is yet more proof that nothing comes as easy as we might think it does. What this Finnish team has done is truly remarkable. They have turned a game into a franchise. It seems to me that this is only the beginning and I look forward to reading more and more about their success story.

Trump being ridiculous on Scottish Wind Turbine installation

While objection on the offshore windfarm megaproject that will generate up to 6.4 Gigawatts of Power came during 2011 from Donald Trump it wasn’t until Feb 9 however that he exploded in a letter to Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmon. Why? Because the windfarms might be visible from his luxury golf resort in Aberdeenshire. Right. Big distraction.

Donald Trump is of course being ridiculous. This proves, once again, that not only is he not at all considerate of the environment, but that he is also completely oblivious of the effort that the Scottish are making for becoming frontiers in renewable energy generation. I hope that the Scottish do not give up on this fight. Pioneering in renewable energy is desperately needed not just in Scotland, but in the world.

Apple to release brand new OS! OS X Mountain Lion coming this summer.

Not even seven months later Apple is to release their brand new OS. OS X Mountain Lion is going to be released to developers today and the rest of us this summer!

New features include:

  • Notification center
  • Messages for Mac
  • Twitter integration
  • New Safari
  • Notes
  • Game center
  • Reminders
  • Air Play Mirroring (by far, my favorite)

Ok, Apple. You got me by surprise!

The OS will of course cost, just like Lion, $30. The company has pledged to come out with a new upgrade every year. Sounds like Apple is giving this new OS business strategy a shot.

Insanely Simple

Something tells me you won’t be surprised when I tell you it’s about Steve Jobs and Apple. But this book is different. Really.

Alright. I’ll read it. But please let the fact that it is not the same be true, because if it is, it will be really boring. Although I have to admit, it sounds very interesting from a business perspective.

First on-screen kiss dates back to 1896!

Here you go. My contribution to this shenanigan celebration. First on-screen kiss was captured in 1896 when Thomas Edison kissed Canadian actress May Irwin. Interestingly this was a publicity stunt by Mr. Edison. A scandalous publicity stunt that is!
